The supporting structures of architecture inevitably exist within space, from the vertical pillars and walls to the horizontal beams and boards. How to harmoniously coexist with structures within space has always been a question posed prior to entering a space, leading to the emergence of various design forms and construction methods. Therefore, the worksfeatured here endeavor to use the structures within architectural space as “starting points”, and employ a “dissection” approach as my method of construction.

Pillars eliminates the visible rectangular outline of the pillar by leaving only the wooden layers to indicate its scope. The structure is based on transparent glass containers as the foundation of the layers. Glass containers are manufactured to contain “thing”, and the void within containers constitutes their intrinsic value, while the thickness of the external glass is indispensable for its structural existence as a “body”.

If the thickness of gaps or contours can support and construct something, it could be a structurally robust pillar, or it may not support anything; that would depend on one’s imagination of the gaps, as thin as paper spread out, but which can be rolled up to form a cylindrical body.
